“Single man” sounds kind of weak. When did the term “bachelor” fall out of favor? Wikipedia gives us the history-
The part about “confirmed bachelor” meaning “gay” is certainly part of it, but maybe it’s more that in the 60’s it seemed to be incredibly old-fashioned, which of course it was. As I have said before marriage as the norm had just recently become the case, and the mores of the 30’s and before seemed very, and permanently, out of date.
But since marriage as the norm seems to have been a temporary thing, I think it’s time we brought back unmarried manhood as an honorable estate.
